Mapping the Future of Community Health in the MENA Region
Community health systems are the backbone of equitable healthcare delivery, especially in regions where vulnerable populations, including children, face significant health challenges. Recognizing the critical need to strengthen these systems, the UNICEF Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Regional Office, with support from hera, commissioned a mapping of community health resources, policies, and infrastructure across 12 countries in the MENA region. The resulting findings are set to guide policymakers, donors, and civil society organisations in making strategic, informed decisions that will shape the future of community health in the region.
A first-of-its-kind resource for the MENA Region
Conducted between August 2023 and November 2024, this mapping provides a snapshot of the community health landscape in Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen, and the subnational area of Northwest Syria. Unlike a traditional assessment of health outcomes, the initiative focused on documenting the availability of key components—policies, workforce, governance structures, and service delivery mechanisms.
The cornerstone of this effort is the development of the MENA Region Community Health Dashboard, an interactive platform designed to visualise country-specific data and track progress over time. Stakeholders can use the dashboard to identify gaps and monitor advancements across pillars such as governance, health information systems, service delivery, and financing. The dashboard will be updated annually to ensure that the information remains dynamic and actionable, allowing for continuous improvement.
Collaborative and inclusive approach
One of the assignment’s standout features was its co-creation methodology. Co-creation workshops held in each country brought together national ministries, civil society representatives, and other key stakeholders. These workshops facilitated in-depth discussions and tailored solutions for the unique challenges of each country. For example, the case study on Northwest Syria highlighted innovative approaches to addressing health needs in a fragile and conflict-affected setting.
This participatory approach not only enriched the study’s findings but also served as a catalyst for ongoing collaboration. In some countries, the workshops spurred the establishment of working groups and partnerships aimed at addressing gaps in community health systems
Driving change through data
The dashboard, along with 12 detailed country briefs, a case study, and a regional synthesis report, serve as tools for advocacy and decision-making. Featured on the UNICEF MENA, UNICEF HQ, and CHDP websites, these resources are already generating momentum. Policymakers and stakeholders now have access to actionable insights, empowering them to set priorities and advocate for targeted investments in community health.
A vision for the future
This mapping initiative underscores the importance of collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and sustained investment in community health. By shining a light on what exists and what is needed, it paves the way for a healthier future for everyone across the MENA region.
