2024

ANNUAL OVERVIEW

2024: A Year of Growth, Collaboration, and Perseverance

This year has been marked by significant progress, as well as new challenges that have shaped our path forward. It was a year in which we further strengthened our internal structures, expanded our partnerships, and continued our unwavering commitment to the right to health and development through quality and impactful work.

As we reflect on this year, we recognise the importance of nurturing both our internal culture and our external relationships. Our ongoing efforts toward B Corps certification, which will be completed in the first half of 2025, highlight our dedication to ethical and sustainable business practices. We prepared for ISO 9001:2015 recertification, which we view as an important part of maintaining the highest industry standards for delivering quality work. This year we also took important steps towards enhancing our safeguarding policies, with new frameworks in place and the appointment of a safeguarding focal point—ensuring the continued protection of all involved in our projects. As always, hera continues to evolve and grow, and we are proud to say that several of our employees are now also shareholders in the company.

In 2024, hera led and supported several initiatives focused on strengthening health systems and improving access to essential services, particularly in the context of humanitarian responses. These efforts spanned key areas such as health system resilience, universal health coverage, and social inclusion. Notable projects included evaluations of health system strengthening programmes, policy recommendations for advancing global health priorities, and developing tools to better assess vulnerability in crisis settings. hera also played a role in evaluating emergency responses to natural disasters and public health crises, providing critical insights for future humanitarian efforts. Have a look below for some project highlights from the year, along with a breakdown in numbers.

We feel that it is important to acknowledge that the world around us continues to impact our work and well-being. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has affected our colleagues, reminding us of the human cost of global events. The climate crisis, economic hardships, political turmoil, and conflicts in other regions further underscore the importance of solidarity and support. In times like these, the strength of our cooperative spirit has been crucial. Prioritising health and well-being, while supporting each other in moments of need, has been a guiding principle for us all.

As we look forward to 2025, we carry with us the lessons learned and the knowledge that our collective efforts continue to shape the future of our organisation. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing trust and collaboration from our clients, employees, associates, and partners. Here’s to a healthy and productive year ahead, filled with new adventures and opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

In solidarity,

Marieke Deville (Director) and Leen Jille (CEO)

2024 hera Highlights

In 2024, hera engaged in a diverse range of projects focused on improving health systems, particularly in humanitarian contexts. These initiatives centred on expanding healthcare access, and ensuring the effective delivery of services, particularly for vulnerable populations. The work addressed pressing health system challenges, including the integration of immunisation systems, the advancement of universal health coverage and the delivery of sexual and reproductive health and rights services in emergencies.

Key efforts included evaluating large-scale health strengthening programmes, such as the Gavi Health System Strengthening initiative, which aimed to reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. hera also supported policy reform, particularly in response to the Lusaka Agenda, which outlines pathways for achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and reinforcing primary health care (PHC). This work was complemented by the development of innovative tools for monitoring and evaluating healthcare access, such as the Critical Milestone Timelines tool, which tracks progress towards key health objectives.

Additionally, hera provided critical assessments of emergency responses to natural disasters and public health crises. The evaluation of UNICEF’s response to the dual crisis of Cyclone Freddy and cholera in Malawi and Mozambique offered valuable insights into the effectiveness of humanitarian interventions. A broader study commissioned by the WHO Global Health Cluster explored the COVID-19 pandemic's long-term impact on health systems and humanitarian health responses.

A major focus for hera this year was the creation of a gender strategy for Mozambique, supported by an action plan designed to foster equality and mitigate harm within the public infrastructure sector.
